Project outline

DCE played a pivotal role in transforming a disused quarry and brickworks in Glen Iris into the St Kevin’s College Educational and Sporting Facility, delivering Australasia’s largest privately owned synthetic sporting complex. Engaged from initial site due diligence in 2013, DCE led the masterplanning and delivered full civil design for the 5.5-hectare site, which required 40,000m³ of imported fill to establish a stable sub-base.

The precinct features three FIFA-regulation soccer pitches, an AFL-recommended 165x135m football oval, a FIH hockey field with integrated tennis courts, cricket nets, a 200m athletics track with field amenities, an indoor basketball and badminton court, two pavilions, car parking, and links to the Gardiners Creek Trail. With more than three hectares of synthetic turf installed, the design also incorporates innovative water-sensitive urban design, retaining and reusing stormwater on site before discharge to Gardiners Creek.

Delivered within a 16-month construction program and opened in June 2017, the project successfully addressed significant environmental and engineering challenges, including flood and audit overlays, subsidence, and onsite stormwater storage. The outcome set a benchmark for integrated sporting precincts, earning DCE two Sports and Play Industry Association (SAPIA) awards for Construction of Sports Facilities and Innovation.
