DCE is proud to have been the principal consultant for the Pakenham Racecourse Relocation to Tynong project, delivering Victoria’s first new thoroughbred track in almost forty years.
The 250-ha greenfield site adjacent to Ararat Creek is former Koo Wee Rup floodplains. External to existing drainage schemes, extensive stormwater investigations and feasibility works were required. Hydraulic modelling to quantify existing stormwater flows and determine 1% AEP flood levels was required.
DCE created a Melbourne Water-approved drainage strategy for the 250-hectare area and worked closely with Melbourne Water to produce hydrological models of the site. RORB, MUSIC and two-dimensional TUFLOW modelling to determine flooding extents adjacent to Ararat Creek and its tributaries were undertaken. The resulting information was useful for Melbourne Water and informed the DCE design.
DCE’s design and construction management brief also included a 3.6 ha wetland for water quality treatment and a large swale for major flow conveyance. Modelling confirmed that the development is protected from flooding and that major event flows are unlikely to scour wetland vegetation. Melbourne Water accepted the drainage strategy, wetland, and swale designs.
The design was completed on time and on budget and DCE received a 12d International Innovation Award for design work completed on the project.
